Racing: Minnaloushka worth following at Marlborough tomorrow

Trainer Mark Harris, who won two races at Oamaru yesterday, is predicting an improved showing from Minnaloushka at Waterlea tomorrow.

"She [Minnaloushka] is the best she has ever been," Harris said.

Minnaloushka won the listed Canterbury Breeders' Stakes (1400m) at Riccarton in November but her form fell away and she was spelled in May.

Harris won maiden races yesterday with La Luna and Soldier Of Love, both raced by the Hawksfield racing syndicate.

Harris has a 50% share in the syndicate. The other members are Mike Boussad, of Waiau, Janie Mackinnon, of Tasmania, Dick Lynn, of Wellington, David and Roz Younghans, of Melbourne and Frances Ryman, of Tuahiwi.

Soldier Of Love, a rising 4yr-old Lord Of Warriors-Miss Nicolight filly, was bred by Harris' wife, Rusyl.

La Luna was having her first start. She was bought by Harris at the South Island sale two years ago.

"I thought she [La Luna] was a chance for the One Thousand Guineas last spring but she had to have a chip removed from her ankle. She was probably born with it," Harris said.

La Luna is by O'Reilly and the first foal of Cape Merlot, a Cape Cover mare.

Her first foal, Elusive Red (by Elusive City), has won three 2yr-old races in the Central Districts this season from the Lisa Latta stable.

• Aronsay, winner of the rating 85 2200m yesterday, will return to Oamaru for the Oamaru Cup tomorrow week.

"We hope we can make up for last year when he was very unlucky in the Oamaru Cup," Michael Daly, the trainer of Aronsay, said.

Aronsay was a fast-finishing second to Soph. He won his next start over 1800m at the Grand National meeting.

Aronsay has won six races and $55,000 in stakes for his 88-year-old owner, Bob Fiddes, of Waimate.

• Trainer Terri Rae is viewing the stakes races in the spring for The Big Ginga, who ran on strongly to win the race for 2yr-olds yesterday. A grand type, he could prove another worthwhile purchase for Rae and Matt Shepherd at the Gold Coast sales. The son of Oarsman was a $20,000 purchase at a June sale.

Miss Millbrook, who returned to winning form in a rating 80 1600m, will be served by Raise The Flag this spring.

• Tim Williams and Gavin Smith were both suspended from race driving until midnight on January 29 for offences at Forbury Park on Thursday night.

Smith admitted careless driving on Bet Away, who shifted out on the home turn and caused Magic Edition to tangle. Bet Away was relegated from first to last.

Williams admitted not giving Richard Jay every opportunity to win. He did not take a gap in the home straight with Richard Jay, the favourite, who finished fifth.
