From fire jugglers to trampers and cheerleaders, students’  groups and clubs were on show at the Reorientation Clubs and Societies Day yesterday.

The day, organised by the Otago University Students’ Association, featured new additions including cheerleading, an ‘‘open martial arts gym’’, an art club and clubs for surfers and skateboarders.

The open martial arts gym will include a range of different martial arts  including kickboxing and judo. OUSA president James Heath said there were about 86 stalls, and about 5000 students came through to sign up for activities they could do in the second semester.

‘‘It’s primarily winter seasonal clubs and societies.’’

He thought it was ‘‘really important’’ to welcome students back, and the day allowed them to start the semester with some new interests and hobbies.
