Much more than the costumes have changed at the Otago Gang Show over the past 40 years.

After four decades, Noel and Sue Walker, earlier of Dunedin, now of Te Anau, are still co-directing the show, which is held every two years.

The show's many changes over the years- including a switch to contemporary song and dance, as well as to more sophisticated stage projection and scripts-have helped maintain their interest.

"It's a lot more lively, and the story lines are much more sophisticated," Mr Walker says.

"That's what keeps us going.

"It's the opportunity to change direction.

"If it hadn't been for that, we would have given up the Gang Show years ago," he said.

The latest production starts at the Mayfair Theatre in South Dunedin at 7.30pm next Tuesday, and features a cast of 76 scouts and guides on stage, supported by another 100 backstage.

The Walkers are just as keen on fostering young talent on the stage as they were when they began helping to run the Scout theatrical show 40 years ago.

"It's just seeing the young people developing their skills," Mrs Walker said, as another rehearsal by scouts and guides got under way last night.

"It's a huge team effort, especially with us living in Te Anau.

"We're supported by many fine people who have been our friends for many years," Mr Walker said.

The Walkers had also learned to use the four-hour drive from Te Anau, and back, to "bounce things off each other", to learn music, and fine-tune thoughts.

The couple enjoys watching young performers, who often have no formal theatrical or musical training, displaying natural talent and developing their skills over successive shows.

Kaitlyn Joyce (16), of Logan Park High School, had initially been "quiet as a mouse" but had gained in confidence and, in her third show, was now playing a significant role as Little Red Riding Hood, Mr Walker said.

Mr Walker is group leader of the Te Anau Scout Group, one of the country's largest, and Mrs Walker is the Te Anau cub leader.

The latest Gang Show runs at 7.30pm until Saturday July 13. A 2pm matinee will also be held that day.
