John Carran, of Otautau, had his 16th win as an owner this season when Redfern cleared maiden ranks at Waimate yesterday.

The meeting was abandoned after two races due to the slippery nature of the track at the 800m. The meeting was called off by the Judicial Control Authority.

Redfern and the other winner, Our Premonition in the 2yr-old race, were both bred by Alan Jones and Edwina Morris, who operate Berkley Stud at Greenpark.

Both horses were sold as 2yr-olds at the South Island sale. Redfern (a Keeninsky-Peace And Quiet gelding) was bought for $11,000 by Carran in 2009 and Our Premonitiom (Postponed-Hampton Court filly) was a $7500 purchase last August by Nigel and Philippa Babbage, of Christchurch.

Babbage, a currency and commodities trader, formerly of New York, donates 10% of the profits from his business, Mohua, to help re-establish the mohua or yellowhead, a small bird found in South Island forests and some offshore islands. Babbage established the Kokako Charitable Trust last year. Ornithologists hope to prove the kokako is not extinct.

Our Premonition is trained at Riccarton by Kevin Hughes, who said he would now spell the filly with a view to the Canterbury Belle Stakes in the spring.

Redfern gave leading trainer Michael Pitman his 101st win for the season. Pitman has trained the winners of 15 other races for Carran this season. Carran has also won races with Milo (four, including the Gore and Dunedin Guineas), El Chico (six, including the group three Easter Stakes and Ashburton Cup), Sand Toyz (two, including the Miss Scenicland Stakes) and Foneleven (three).

Carran races Milo, Sand Toyz and Redfern with his wife, Evelyn. They share the ownership of El Chico with Pitman and John has a share in Foneeleven.

"Redfern is in a $10,000 bonus race at Ashburton next week," Pitman said.

Redfern and Our Premonition are the first foals bred from their dams by Jones and Morris. Peace And Quiet (Niniski-Quiet Harbour), the dam of Redfern, had six earlier foals. Our Premonition is the fifth foal of Hampton Court (Kingdom Bay-Tudor Flash).

• Seven riders were fined for being in possession of modified safety vests at the Oamaru meeting on Thursday. The charges were heard yesterday.

David Walsh, Chris Johnson, Michelle Carston, Ryan Bishop and Jamie Bullard were each fined $100 and the apprentices KC Walters and Courtney Van Der Werf were each fined $50 by the Judicial Control Authority.
