This year's Gold Guitar awards will be watched by a visitor perhaps more discerning than most.

United States ambassador to New Zealand Scott Brown will be a guest of honour at Sunday night's senior finals in Gore, and he arrives with a bona fide country music interest.

Mr Brown's daughter, Ayla Brown, is a successful country music artist, the veteran of two albums and more than a decade's touring and performing throughout the States.

Awards convener Philip Geary said he and his committee were excited to welcome the ambassador.

"Mr Brown made a special request to attend, and we're delighted he'll be sharing in the enjoyment and excitement of all our audiences at this year's finals events."

The awards this year had attracted their second-highest number of entrants, 736 across all categories, Mr Geary said.

"It's a reflection of the growing appeal of the wider festival down here in Gore, and the Gold Guitars' position at the forefront of country music in New Zealand. We continue to go from strength to strength."

He described competitors as a blend of 80% returning artists, and 20% new contenders.

"There's always a very high calibre of performance right through our juniors to our seniors, and you never know when that hidden gem is going to emerge from among the previously unseen talent. Every year there's something new to enjoy."

Intermediate (age 13-17), 60-plus and singer-songwriter sections had enjoyed "healthy" increases this year, which was "heartening" for the country music scene as a whole.

A prize package of $15,000 awaited the senior overall winner but simply taking part was enough for many.

"It's a buzz. People are here to share their love of country music."
