More than 100 people turned out for the launch of the book by Dunedin woman Lesley Elliott  about her daughter Sophie's 2008 murder, how it has affected the Elliott family, and the family's view on and aims for changes to the justice system and victims' rights.

The launch took place at the Wall Street mall on Saturday, which would have been Sophie Elliott's 26th birthday. The book, Sophie's Legacy, was written with Dunedin author Bill O'Brien and launched by University of Otago law dean Mark Henaghan, who said it was a remarkable piece of writing that he hoped every New Zealander would read.

He praised Mrs Elliott's courage in writing the book, which she herself later said had been "extremely difficult".

The Dunedin launch of the Sophie Elliott Foundation, which aims to educate women and girls about the signs of domestic abuse, was also held at the same event.
