University of Otago vice-chancellor Prof Harlene Hayne invited all female residential assistants to a special hui yesterday to discuss the safety of women in residential halls.

The hui was held after recent claims students at Knox College had been sexually assaulted, and after a scandal around inappropriate traditions in Selwyn College broke last year.

A spokesman said the purpose of the "hui wahine" was to discuss sexual safety practices within residential colleges with the women leaders who lived in the colleges.

"The hui will provide a safe environment, where women can share anything in complete trust and confidence."

Media were not allowed to attend the hui for privacy reasons.

"Confidentiality for those who participate is crucial."

A university spokeswoman also said that while male RAs were not included in the initial meeting, there might be a discussion with other staff depending on what came out of the initial meeting.

About 150 RAs live in the colleges as supervisors and support staff, and about 3500 students live in the colleges.
