One person was injured and five cattle were put down after a stock truck crashed near Waimate yesterday.
The truck-and-trailer unit rolled on State Highway 82 near the intersection with Shearers Hill Rd, about 20km southwest of Waimate, shortly after 2.30pm.
St John spokesman Gerard Campbell said the driver of the truck sustained minor injuries and was assessed and treated at the scene by St John staff, but did not require hospital treatment.
A vet from Waimate Veterinary Centre who went to the crash site said five of the 55 animals were put down. The remaining cattle had grazes.
A heavy tow truck was also called, and a Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said two fire crews from Waimate also attended.
The road was temporarily closed in both directions between Ikawai Middle Rd and Serpentine Valley Rd, and a diversion put in place.
