City Highlanders A found itself an unlikely winner in its premier men's match against the Taieri Tuataras yesterday.
City had the early chances but was not able to convert the two penalty corners it was awarded.
It took Taieri 10 minutes to feel its way into the game but once it did, it dominated the first half.
The introduction of Andrew Mitchell into the Taieri forwards gave it more energy up front, but Taieri still struggled, having several opportunities but being unable to capitalise on them.
Mitchell finally broke the deadlock, getting around the goalie for an easy goal to give Taieri a 1-0 lead at halftime.
The second half started much like the first with Taieri creating all the play and City having only fleeting visits outside its own half.
The game then changed through a goal for City from Jesse Porter.
Porter was allowed to take the ball unchallenged into the circle and was given space to take a shot, hitting the back of the goal and leaving the Taieri defence dumbfounded.
Taieri then started to panic as it looked to score and take the lead again, only to have one of its players sent from the field. City struck straight away with Reuben Molnar scoring to make it 2-1.
Taieri had opportunities to level the game in the last quarter but still couldn't convert possession into goals, letting City take the win.
