Hockey: Albany A thrashes Kings

Albany A cemented its place at the top of the premier men's competition with a 9-0 victory over Kings United on Saturday.

The difference between the teams was visible from the start, Albany finding holes in the Kings defence and getting passes to stick, while Kings struggled to find any gaps and at times did not know where to pass the ball.

Kings never really looked like it was in the match after Albany scored two goals in the first two minutes.

On attack, Albany was patient and willing to wait for holes to open in the Kings defence, often holding on to the ball and passing rather than rushing forward in attack.

Jeremy Morris was everywhere for Albany, scoring three goals and playing an important part in his side's attacks.

Albany made sure Kings was unable to build any momentum, with its rushing defence forcing Kings into making risky passes.

Kings did have some chances and looked to be making inroads into the Albany defence during the first part of the second half, but a lack of patience meant Albany was able to shut down the attack.

Haughton Gilbert was a menace up front for Albany, causing trouble for the Kings defence whenever he had possession near the goal and stealing the ball several times.

This was a game Kings would have wanted to win, having a chance to jump Albany on the points table.

Instead, it found itself struggling against a much better team.

In other premier games, University A beat City Highlanders 8-0, and the Taieri Tuataras downed University B 3-2.
