Strong support for fuel service plan

Makaraka Estate Ltd's $2.6 million plans to reinstate petrol services to Arrowtown attracted 148 submissions, 118 of them in support.

Submissions on the proposal closed on Wednesday.

Just three opposed the plan, the remaining 27 submissions being neutral. Makaraka Estate Ltd has applied for land-use consent to establish a fuel service station, a service station shop, an office and a new commercial activity on the site at 8 Berkshire St; the site of the former petrol station.

Mobil fuel pumps were taken from Arrowtown in 2007, meaning for residents and visitors to the town, the closest fuel outlet is at Frankton.

As part of the development, Makaraka Estate Ltd, an Auckland-based company, plans to restore the former Arrowtown Wesleyan Methodist Church building to its original form.

The church was established in the 1890s but had several additions, including a lean-to structure, which would be demolished.

The site contains Shamrock Motors' auto repair workshop, which would continue to operate, the petrol to be supplied by Gasoline Alley Services Ltd (GAS), to which Makaraka Estate Ltd had the rights.

If consent was granted, work would begin immediately on the 16-week programme.

The service station would contain two fuel pumps supplied by a new 50,000-litre underground compartmentalised fuel tank. The pumps would be covered by a canopy. The service station facility would include a shop.

The existing auto repair workshop would be demolished in part and altered to include a workshop extension, the existing tyre bay to be retained and extended to include office space.

Twenty-six car-parking spaces were proposed, of which seven would be located within the workshop.

Overall, the proposed redevelopment required consent as a non-complying activity in the Arrowtown historic residential management zone under the Queenstown Lakes District Council district plan.

Concept plans had been presented to the Arrowtown planning advisory group last May, which was in support of the former church being restored to create "an attractive entrance" to the town.
