Four of Hotere's pieces were up for auction last night but only the bids on lithograph Nineteen Ninety got past the reserve prices set by the works' owner, Anne McKenzie, a hospice volunteer.
Espana and the Jerusalem Series lithographs Vertical Cross and X Black were all passed in, with only a few bids made on each.
Nineteen Ninety sold for $8000 to Ginny Green after bidding had started at $2000.
The crowd of about 35 people also bid for the other 31 items for auction, including wines, car valet services, accommodation and other art works.
Hospice marketing co-ordinator Lyn Chapman said the evening raised about $20,000, which was really "great", as the hospice relied heavily on donations and fundraising.
"Everyone felt they had contributed to the hospice and got a bargain as well," she said.
