Show draws from real-life OCD

Kim Georgine (Christchurch)
Co-writer and producer
The Visitor

Q What's your act all about?

A I suffered from obsessive compulsive disorder as a child through to my early 30s, while [co-writer and producer] Lizzie [Tollemache] has a sister who is currently suffering from it. These factors led us to some interesting discussions about OCD and from there we created this show.

Q Why will Dunedin audiences enjoy it?

A It's very raw, disturbing and yet has some funny moments. We think it will be a memorable experience.

Q What do you know about Dunedin?

A Not much. I've been there once and found it to have quite a cohesive city centre, unlike Christchurch which seems to just sprawl outwards ad-infinitum. It was more urbane than I was expecting and very beautiful. I know it has a very solid and reputable arts presence, perhaps even more so than Christchurch. But it's way too cold for me.

I'm from Los Angeles, so New Zealand is already stretching it as it is and living in the South Island took a lot of acclimatising so I'm not keen to go anywhere even colder.

Q What makes you laugh?

A I now, officially, love the Kiwi sense of humour. Can't say I did in the beginning. Us Yanks have no sense of humour, as everyone knows, and being insulted at every turn and watching others undergoing the same treatment was no fun at first. But now I've officially adapted.

• The Visitor is on for the final time at 9pm tonight at the Globe Theatre.
