Changes to regulations on Stewart Island lighting have been taken a step forward after the Southland District Council voted to endorse a change to the district plan.
The council voted unanimously at its meeting yesterday to endorse the recommendation from the regulatory and consents committee which seeks to establish a regulatory framework for outdoor lighting on the island.
The amendments are aimed at helping with the island's bid to receive and maintain International Dark Skies Sanctuary status.
Background work to the proposed plan change will take about six months to compile before the community is consulted.
