The largest number of South Island pupil re-enrolments outside Canterbury after the Christchurch earthquake was in the Queenstown Lakes district, and a small number of families are considering staying.
A total of 486 primary, intermediate and secondary school pupils from Christchurch city, Selwyn and Waimakariri re-enrolled in Queenstown Lakes district schools, between February 24 and March 16, Statistics New Zealand said.
Up to 150 Canterbury pupils had returned to their original schools but 339 had stayed. From those three Canterbury districts, 8166 pupils re-enrolled in other schools around the country.
As of March 16, 654 pupils had returned to their original school, leaving 7512 pupils still away.
Queenstown Primary School received a peak of 45 Canterbury pupils and 22 were still enrolled, principal John Western said on Monday.
Asked if families were talking about enrolling their children at the school permanently, Mr Western said there was a mix of reactions.
"Many are just unsure of where they are at the moment. Some have suggested they're staying for a number of months."
Mr Western said school resources had coped with the influx without the need for extra teachers or assistance.
Arrowtown School welcomed an extra 55 Canterbury pupils, but the number had decreased to 23 by Monday.
Principal Robin Harris said minor pressure on resources lasted about 10 days and no extra teachers had been required.
