Waimate's Edwardian heritage celebrations started yesterday. While Maureen and Noel Bradshaw's (pictured) home town may be "Victorian Oamaru", they said they enjoyed Waimate's Edwardian celebrations just as much.

The theme of this year's Waimate celebrations is "A Passage to India", with a social event last night in a hall decorated with Indian statues, gods and fresh flowers, and featuring Indian cuisine, dance, music and culture.

This morning, the celebrations will be officially opened at the Savoy tearooms, followed by the "Promenade in the Park" at Seddon Square which has free family entertainment with an Indian flavour and children's events.

There will be a mini-cricket match between Alf's Army, from Oamaru, and the Ferrymead Heritage Group, from Christchurch, and a game of polo on hobby horses.

Tonight, there is the glamorous Edwardian dinner, with the theme "Jewel in the Crown - Night of the Raj".
