Minor injuries after crash at Port Chalmers

An elderly woman crashed her car down a bank in Port Chalmers yesterday and had to be freed by firefighters.

The crash happened in Bernicia St, near Wickliffe Tce, just after noon.

A crowd of St Joseph's School pupils looked on as fire crews from Willowbank and Port Chalmers assisted the shaken woman from her vehicle.

Port Chalmers Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Stephen Hill said crews managed to free the woman from the car, which was wedged between a bank and a fence on the footpath, without the use of their extrication equipment.

St John spokesman Gerard Campbell said the 77-year-old woman was treated by ambulance officers for minor injures but was not taken to hospital.
