Brighton Rd has reopened today, putting an end to a long delay for motorists.

Contractors yesterday worked to finish repairs on a blocked sewage pipe in Brighton Rd at Westwood which had cut the direct route between Dunedin and Brighton since Thursday.

The closure meant motorists had to use a detour via Saddle Hill Rd and Scroggs Hill Rd.

The Dunedin City Council had hoped to reopen the road to one lane by 5pm last night but there was a further delay. The road reopened around 7am today.

Water and waste services network contracts manager William Clifford said further work to replace manholes and reseal the road was expected to be completed by sometime next week.

A cracked pipe meant some Westwood residents were experiencing water supply issues and the council was working to fix the problem as soon as possible, Mr Clifford said.
