RWC volunteer chance

Queenstown residents keen to be a part of the 2011 Rugby World Cup as local volunteers should register online as soon as possible, the Queenstown Lakes District Council says.

QLDC volunteer co-ordinator Jan Maxwell said, because of the police-vetting and the information-gathering process for the 50 positions, people should register their interest well in advance.

"It's going to be a big event, so you can't just turn up on the day - there's a process to go through," she said.

Queenstown will be acting as the official training venue for three teams - England, Ireland and Romania - and possible volunteer roles include meeting teams at the airport, facilitating transport and handing out information.

Mrs Maxwell said she was waiting to hear more about how volunteers could help, but the resort itself was already well placed to cater for the visitors.

"We are different from other parts of the country in that we are set up to operate for tourists," she said.

The next RWC information meeting for registered volunteers is set for Friday, March 25, at the Queenstown Events Centre.

Registered volunteers will be contacted directly by the Wellington RWC team, and a training programme is due to start in May.
