Lakes Leisure has applied for resource consent to drastically increase the number of car parks available at the Queenstown Events Centre.
Event manager JD Marrable said it was looking to extend the main car park with another 107 parks, including more room for disabled and motorbike parking.
"Obviously, our current car park capacity was only built for the event centre in 1997 and now that there's an aquatic centre, a gym and tourist developments, it seems we've outgrown our current capacity," Mr Marrable said.
"It's to pick up that increase - at the moment, everyone's parking down State Highway 6, or across from the fields, and people are finding it hard to get car parks."
It was hoped earthworks for the parks would begin in March or April, for completion by May 1, he said.
A figure on how much the development would cost had not yet been reached because the proposal was still in the planning process, Mr Marrable said.
