Flower attraction causing a distraction

Sunflowers at Totara, just south of Oamaru, are a picture, with many people stopping to photograph them.

But some motorists are creating a traffic hazard on State Highway 1 in the quest for a better view.

Oamaru police received a complaint yesterday morning from a truck driver about vehicles stopping suddenly, some even in the lanes on the highway.

Sergeant Ross Lory, of Oamaru, said police went to observe what was happening and spotted cars slowing for occupants to have a better view of the flowers.

Those who stopped did so in the rest area off the highway outside the historic Totara Estate.
