Skateboarders show skills

Skaters from around the Southern Lakes, Alexandra, Invercargill and Dunedin displayed their finest skateboarding skills at the second annual "Summa Sk8 Sesh", at the Queenstown Gardens Skate Park, on Saturday.

A crowd of about 150 people watched as 16 skaters in the under-16 category and nine skaters in the open-aged category battled for cash and gear prizes in the Summerdaze Festival event hosted by Summit Youth.

Skaters had two minutes to impress the judges on both the skate park and the wooden mini-ramp, transported from co-sponsor Revolver.

Sam Wilson (14) was first in the under-16 category and won a $100 Quest voucher, a Quest deck, $50 cash, a Vans T-shirt and a Chop hat.

Teran Lockley (15) was second and won $30 cash, a $20 voucher and a Element T-shirt, while Hootie Andrews (14) was third, winning a $20 Quest voucher and a Quest beanie.

Nick Bright (25) won first prizes of $300 cash, an Element deck and Vans shorts, in the open category.

Digby Luxton (17) was second and won an Element deck, $100 cash and an Element T-shirt, while Luke Gaskell (24), third, won a $50 Quest voucher and a Quest T-shirt.

Bumps and bruises were part of the fun, though one boy sprained his wrist and was treated by Red Cross volunteers.

Female skateboaders were conspicuous by their absence.

The youngest entrant was Marshall Jones (6), of Queenstown, who attended with his family.
