Comedy fans are invited to bring picnics and portable chairs to the Queenstown Gardens tonight to watch live performances of popular sketches and songs by a troupe of local performers.

About 15 Wakatipu performers from Remarkable Theatre will stage A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Gardens around the pond in the Queenstown Gardens. Directed by Kate Blackhurst, they have been practising the dozen scenes since November for the 80-minute promenade show.

Fee Stephenson, who impressed audiences as Nancy in Showbiz Queenstown's Oliver! last winter, said she was looking forward to performing.

"It will definitely be entertaining seeing people doing these strange things in costume around the gardens. It's really varied; [there's] something for everyone."

The show begins at the Park St main gates, where Steve Wild will guide the audience through the 12 acts of the performance.

• Tours for A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Gardens start at the main gates at 6pm and 8pm today; 2pm, 4pm, 6pm and 8pm tomorrow; and 2pm, 4pm and 6pm on Sunday. Admission by gold-coin donation. Bookings not required.
