Engineers hope to complete the first eight of 12 towers needed for the first stage of the Mahinerangi wind farm by the weekend, TrustPower project engineer Stewart Reid confirmed.

Hampered by high winds last week, the construction crew assembled the first three towers during the weekend and on Monday, and expected to complete a fourth by late yesterday.

Weather permitting, the crew aimed to assemble one turbine tower a day and hoped to "ideally have eight of them up by the end of Saturday", Mr Reid said.

The turbine towers, which are in 28.7m, 24.36m, and 24.4m sections, are being transported to the 1723ha site near Lake Mahinerangi by slow-moving convoy from Dunedin's Leith wharf.

Mr Reid said the convoy posted some good times to shave about an hour off the expected trip from the city, along State Highways 1 and 87 to Mahinerangi Rd and the Eldorado Track.

The convoy leaves Dunedin about 4am, but cannot use Mahinerangi Rd until 7am.

Arriving early meant it avoided more of the early-morning traffic, Mr Reid said.

The 3MW Vestas turbines were due to arrive in Dunedin at the end of the month, and a public open day at Port Otago was confirmed for February 5.

TrustPower expected to generate its first power at the site by the end of February.

The 12-turbine first stage of the project - TrustPower has consent to install up to 100 turbines - will be commissioned in May.
