DCC seeks co-operation with NZ Post

Staff from the Dunedin City Council and New Zealand Post have met to discuss how they can work together following closure of the South Dunedin post shop.

Kiwibank and NZ Post last week announced they would close four branches in South Dunedin, Moray Pl, Dunedin North and Mosgiel.

NZ Post has asked for expressions of interest from Dunedin businesses to help deliver postal services available from the four branches set to be closed.

All four branches will remain open until postal partner businesses are found.

Dunedin City Council community services general manager Simon Pickford said he met NZ Post representatives yesterday morning to discuss potential options. Mr Pickford said he was unable give specific details about what was discussed but more information would be released in the next two or three weeks.

The council contacted NZ Post when it learnt of proposed closure in South Dunedin, said.

At a meeting of the council’s economic development committee councillors voted to express their concerns about the closures directly to the two organisations.

Kiwibank plans to open a stand-alone banking branch in the Dunedin CBD.A NZ Post spokesman said the meeting with council staff was part of its process looking for businesses to work with.

There had already been "a number" of Dunedin businesses who had expressed interest in working with the organisation, the spokesman said. Meetings had already been held with those businesses, as well as the South Dunedin Business Association.

"We are committed to staying in the Dunedin community, and we understand the importance of providing stability and continuity of postal services."

NZ Post was open to and already worked with local councils and community organisations such as the Invercargill City Council, which operates the Bluff post shop.
