Anti-stadium group meeting tonight

The group set up to stop a ratepayer-funded stadium being built in Awatea St, Dunedin, will hold a public meeting tonight which it hopes will encourage people to become involved in the campaign.

The meeting, organised by Stop the Stadium, will be held in the Burns Hall, First Church, at 7.30pm.

President Bev Butler said the group had had a positive reaction to the campaign around the greater Dunedin area.

"We feel we have tapped into a deep sense of disquiet and concern local citizens have about the use of public money and public debt to fund the stadium."

Ms Butler said she planned to speak at the meeting.

Others scheduled to speak are Dr Rob Hamlin of the University of Otago, Otago regional councillor Gerry Eckhoff, and Stop the Stadium members Victor Billot, Peter Entwisle and Elizabeth Kerr.

Ms Butler said the key aim of the meeting was to explain how people could get involved in the campaign.
