Racing: McKay has the credentials

McKay is a top chance to give trainer Robert Dunn his fourth Reefton Cup win today.

McKay won over 2600m at Westport on Tuesday in the hands of John Dunn.

He drove Lucky to win the 2003 Reefton Cup for the stable.

Robert won the race the past two years with Cambo (Tim Williams) and Niraadi (Dexter Dunn).

Close Shave is the focus of attention, aiming for a $10,000 bonus after winning each day at Westport in his first two starts.

His trainers Greg and Nina Hope have a second string in Cullini, who ran third to Franco Emirate and McKay in the Westport Cup on Sunday.

Cullini is off 30m today, 10m better off in the handicap.

She will be driven by Jim Curtin who has won the race as a reinsman with Highview Badlands (2005), Dominion Rock (1997) and Tar El (1989).

Te Kinga Boy is a newcomer to the West Coast circuit.

He won his last start at Addington on December 16.

Beaudiene Bad Babe, who has been campaigning in Auckland, is back at Invercargill for the Central Otago Cup on Sunday.

She finished second to De Lovely in the Great Northern Stakes and the Queen Of Hearts when beginning a fresh campaign.

Ready Set lowered a New Zealand record for a trotter by 2.4sec when winning her fifth successive race at Winton yesterday.

Her time of 2.59.2 for the 2400m (mobile) lowered the record set by the mare Perfect Hold at Winton eight years ago.

Ready Set, trained by Nigel McGrath at Weedons for David and Mrs Renwick, of Christchurch, began her winning streak at Waimate on December 5.

A 6yr-old mare by Monarchy from Diedre's Best, she was bred by Joanne Burrows and Craig Thornley.

"The owners bought her as a 4yr-old after she had qualified for Joanne and Craig," McGrath said.

Diedre's Best, who did not win in three starts, is a half-sister by Meadow Roydon to Diedre's Pride (21 wins).

Ready Set is in a free-for-all at Omakau on Sunday.

McGrath is aiming Anvils Best Ever at the Roxburgh Cup and Beaudiene Christian at the Cromwell meeting.

Anvils Best Ever won the Tuapeka Cup at Forbury Park in October in track record time of 3.59.7 for 3200m.

Beaudiene Christian has had a setback since he hast raced in September.

The Peace Rose, the oldest horse in the field at 8yrs, prevailed in the Equine Stakes.

It was her second win since she began racing from the stable of Clark Barron nine months ago.

She was leased by Ron Barron and Ritchie McDonald after winning four races for trainer Noel Berkett jun.

Heza Boy Star, a maiden trot winner at Motukarara yesterday, is a half-brother by Brylin Boyz to Mon Star, who recorded his seventh win at Ashburton on Sunday.

The pair, out of Star Of Pernod, are raced by Ashburton breeders, David and Gay Luke.
