Sensors in two Dunedin streets will help inform the city council on any changes it makes to improve parking in the city.
Parking sensors will be attached to the road in Vogel and Bond Sts as part of the Dunedin City Council's management of parking.
Council transport manager Nick Sargent said the solar powered sensors used infrared, magnetic and optical technology to monitor how parks were used, for how long and how often.
Information gathered would help the council make decisions about how parking was managed, Mr Sargent said.
In other cities, such as Wellington, similar sensors had been used for parking enforcement, but there were no plans for a similar system in Dunedin, he said.
"That doesn't mean in the future we wouldn't look at the possibility but there are no plans for that right now, they are only for data gathering.''
There had been a considerable amount of feedback received on changes made to parking in Vogel St in 2017, and the sensors would show if the parking was suitable and if any changes were needed.
Parking changes are also proposed as part of the upgrade of Bond St, and the sensors would help ensure those would meet the area's needs, Mr Sargent said.
The sensors would be installed tonight and tomorrow night, and parking on the affected streets would not be available while contractors worked on the installation, he said.
