Otago cricket will undertake an extensive review into the woes of the Otago Volts but is denying it is a witch hunt.

The side's disappointing season came to a conclusion yesterday with a 95-run loss against Canterbury at the University Oval.

The side finished second-last in the Plunket Shield with Canterbury the only side below it.

Sadly for the Volts, the fifth place was actually its best finish in the three domestic competitions.

It finished bottom in the Super Smash competition and the Ford Trophy one-day competition. All up, it had just six wins from 26 games over the season.

The team worked hard in the pre-season but it went wrong at key moments in too many games and managed to win just two out of nine games in the twenty20 competition.

In the Ford Trophy, it won two of its first three games before the holiday break but it did not win another 50-over game when the competition resumed in late January.

Otago Cricket Association chief executive Mike Coggan said an independent review would be carried out looking into the Volts.

He said it was not a witch hunt but was a bird's-eye view of everything about the team and ways the side could improve.

The terms of reference would not be too prescriptive as the person carrying out the review needed to have a complete look at the side.

A review had not been done since Coggan had started in the job in early 2015.

He hoped to have the review under way relatively quickly and it would take about four weeks.

The recommendations would then go to the board which would make any decisions.

Coggan declined to name the person appointed to carry out the review but said the person was associated with High Performance Sport New Zealand.
