Her husband may complain they are fed better than he is, and they may need to be walked for 45 minutes a day, but Lynette Johnston could not be without her seven Pomeranian dogs.

She got her first Pomeranian 20 years ago, but could not remember how long she had had the seven.

The Dunedin woman has bred the dogs in the past, has just started agility training, and competes in local dog shows.

"They are all champions," she said.

Chum, Mitsy, Shandy, Possum, Twinkles, Sasha and Missy sleep in their own special beds and dine on vegetable-laden stew.

"I cook a special stew up for them. My husband thinks they're better fed than him."

But he only has himself to blame as it was he who wanted to get a Pomeranian all those years ago.

"My husband's grandmother had them and he was keen to get one," Mrs Johnston said.

While she may not want to have any more than seven, she loved her dogs.

"They are just great fun to be around."
