One good southern man is looking after another.

In-form Queenstown golfer Ben Campbell said yesterday he had been using Greg Turner as a sounding board as he sought to improve his game.

''I have been using Greg Turner here. When I come back I always give him a call and we go down to the Fork and Tap and I chew the fat with him.

''He has probably been one of the guys to bounce a few things off,'' he said.

''He is just an easy guy to call any time. I have called when I have been overseas.

''When he does not get your phone call he sends you a text. He is just a sound, analytical guy. A spade is a spade with him.''

Campbell has run into good form of late, winning his first tournament as a professional with victory at the NZ PGA last weekend.

''It is always nice to get the monkey off your own back. I played pretty solid last week. The game is feeling pretty good.''

Campbell (26) is a member of Millbrook and is totally familiar with the course.

''I know the course really well and it is nice to sleep in your own bed. Just doing a few things that you are used to. I'm feeling pretty good going into it.

''If I have a good first round, then I'm usually good for the rest of them. Playing round here nearly every day can make it feel very relaxed.''

Campbell lost in a playoff last year at the Open but is looking for confidence from that display.

''I was pretty gutted losing last year. There was never really one point when I really felt like I was going to lose and then to not get the job done it really frustrated me.

''But being under the pump last year was good. I did not get anywhere as nervous as I thought I was going to be. And in the weekend as well I stayed pretty calm and finished it off.''

Campbell has been working on his short game and looking to improve.

''I had a trip to America last year - I felt like I hit better than most of the guys. I hit the ball really well and I finished 50th.

''I just got absolutely killed, they just holed so many more putts than me. So when I came back I knew I had to really tighten the screws up on the short game.''
