A student says she is still shaken after an alleged "peeper" and burglar roamed through her flat while she was sleeping.
Flatmates of the student, who only wants to be known as Katie, arrived back at their Leith St flat after a party early on Thursday and found a man there.
The man fled after being startled by one of her flatmates who yelled at him.
While one flatmate called the police, two others chased the man and restrained him until the police arrived and arrested him.
A 51-year-old Dunedin man appeared in the Dunedin District Court yesterday on burglary-related charges. Granted bail, he will appear in court again on February 27.
Katie was alone at the flat and had left the door to her room unlocked.
"I was the only one here and was pretty much out to it and woke and was told everything.
"I was obviously pretty shaken to know he could have been there watching me."
Katie said she and her flatmates were now urging their friends to keep their flats secure.
"Just lock your doors. It’s not that hard and keeps you so much safer."
Inspector Kevin Lloyd praised the way the group had handled the situation.
"They did a brilliant job and did it all themselves."
It was a reminder for people in the student area to lock their flats, he said.
