A digger being transported on his truck was extensively damaged when it hit a railway bridge in Green Island last night.
The Quality Cobblestoning and Landscaping truck was carrying the digger and towing a road roller when it struck Bridge 244 on the Main South Line, in Carnforth St, shortly before 7pm.
The driver told police he was doing about 40kmh when the digger hit the bridge.
"Then it just went 'boom' and came to a dead stop," he said.
The bridge had a heavy gouge mark underneath, but escaped serious damage. However, the digger's cab was crushed and its hydraulic arm was buckled in the impact.
The truck's tray was also looking the worse for wear.
The driver, who did not want to be identified, was unhurt.
