The controversial alliance between the Queenstown and Auckland airport companies was discussed behind closed doors yesterday during a marathon workshop involving the Queenstown Lakes District Council and other interested parties.

But Mayor Vanessa van Uden is promising the issue will be discussed in public next month.

Describing yesterday's nearly seven-hour-long meeting, from 10am to 5pm, as "very constructive", Ms van Uden said the "future decision-making processes" would be aired at a council meeting on December 17.

The full council met to "receive presentations" from all the various parties involved in the alliance and participating in a subsequent High Court battle.

Air New Zealand deputy chief executive Norm Thompson and Auckland International Airport Ltd chief executive Simon Moutter flew to the resort for the workshop, with Queenstown Airport Corporation represented by chairman Mark Taylor, chief executive Steve Sanderson and board member Alison Gerry, and Queenstown Community Strategic Asset Group spokesman John Martin, joined by group members Ken Matthews, John Davies and Richard Mehrtens.

"This was an opportunity to receive presentations from all parties and enable councillors to hear first-hand those parties' interests and issues," Ms van Uden said.

"The object of the workshop was not to make any decisions, but to hear all points of view.

"I think it was very constructive - councillors had a good opportunity to hear from all of the parties and it was really good, very positive.

"By positive, I mean there wasn't a huge screaming match or anything."
