Otago chefs do not make the cut

Two Otago Polytechnic trainee chefs have missed out on being selected to represent New Zealand in a cooking competition.

Emma Holden, who is studying at the Dunedin campus, and Cromwell student Brendan Bauke were the first Otago Polytechnic students to reach the New Zealand finals of the Fonterra Foodservices Proud To Be A Chef competition.

Before a panel of judges yesterday, the seven finalists prepared an original recipe and answered questions.

Two contestants, one from Auckland and the other from Christchurch, were selected to attend a transtasman cookery masterclass in Melbourne next year.

Dunedin campus cookery lecturer Stephen Ellwood, who was in Auckland for the announcement yesterday, said the Otago students had done well to reach the finals "and there was always next year".
