Swim Centre will be repainted following fire

The entire interior of Cromwell's $3.3 million Swim Centre will be repainted as part of a clean-up at the complex, which was extensively smoke-damaged during a small electrical fire last month.

Breen Construction Ltd, which built the complex, is working with the Central Otago District Council and insurance assessors to determine the extent of damage and cost of repairing it.

Breen staff are sourcing replacement materials from overseas for the complex.

CODC district development manager Anne Pullar said it was not yet known how long the cleaning would take, when the pool would be reopened, or how much the project would cost.

"It will be an extensive job to get the pool complex up and running again," she said.

It is believed a water suction device caused the June 12 fire when it shorted and set fire to plastic grating alongside the pool.

The complex was officially opened on May 1 after eight years of planning and fundraising.

It comprises a six-lane, 2m-deep lap pool, therapeutic pool, spa pool, and children's paddling pool.
