Student organisers are hoping a colourful International Cultural Concert, held at the Dunedin Town Hall this week, will become an annual fixture.

The concert featured "an international array of talent" from the University of Otago, with university students from more than 10 countries singing, dancing and, at times, appearing resplendently clad in their respective national costumes.

The Kootthu Boys, members of the Indian Students Association, before the concert provided a lively sample of things to come with an energetic demonstration of "kootthu" dancing from Tamil Nadu, in Southern India.

Dunedin Mayor Peter Chin was compere, with Gladys Hope providing the choreography.

Participants included members of several Otago University Students Association cultural clubs and groupings, including the Indonesian Community Association, the Indian association, the Malaysian Student Scholars Association, Taiwanese Students Association, Cambodian Cultural Club and African Students Association.

Otago association international students' representative Darren Lee said he had been impressed by the positive attitude and hard work shown by concert participants during rehearsals.

Backing from Mr Chin and sponsorship support from the ANZ bank had also been greatly appreciated, Mr Lee said.

Some smaller-scale annual cultural concert events had been held at the university campus in recent years.

However, this year's event was much bigger and more high profile, and he hoped the town hall concert would soon establish itself as a annual event.
