There may well be some nervous teachers around the Wakatipu basin and Cromwell this week, ahead of AJ Hackett Bungy's 22nd birthday celebrations on Friday.

Three hundred pupils from Queenstown Primary School, Wakatipu High School, St Josephs School and Cromwell's Dunstan Primary School will be joined by teachers, spectators and bungy employees on the 43m-high Kawarau bridge to mark the milestone.

The bungy company would provide free transport to the bridge for the day of fun-filled activities, offering selected children from each school the opportunity to take the plunge for the first time.

Pupils would also get to choose one teacher to toss off the bridge and watch crazy display jumps performed by bungy staff.

AJ Hackett Bungy New Zealand chief executive Michelle Trapski said the company was thrilled to invite the children out to celebrate its birthday.

"It's about getting the next generation of bungy jumpers excited, so they're proud of what their local community has to offer."

Year 13 pupils got the chance to bungy jump off the bridge on Labour Day to mark the end of their school days in Queenstown, she said.

The historic Kawarau bridge was home to the original commercial bungy jump venture and was opened in 1988 by co-founders AJ Hackett and Henry Van Asch.

"Bungy is an iconic activity in the New Zealand tourism industry and we look forward to continuing to challenge and motivate people for many more years to come," Ms Trapski said.

AJ Hackett Bungy Ltd is a finalist in the Westpac Queenstown Chamber of Commerce business awards in the large business category, which will be announced at a black-tie dinner in Queenstown on Saturday night.
