A miners' ball where the ladies fail to show up, a child obsessed with digging to the other side of the world and an alien evacuating humanity from a polluted Earth are among the original works of fiction entered for the inaugural Queenstown Creative Writing Group's short story writing competition.

The combined literary showcase, networking opportunity and prizegiving event will be held in Halo cafe, in Queenstown, on Sunday, October 31, from 4.30pm to 6.30pm. Entry is free.

A total of 29 entries by Southern writers were submitted by the deadline of October 8. Writers are vying for the $300 first prize and two merit prizes of $100 each.

"I'm very pleased with the response and particularly impressed by the range of interpretations of the theme, 'earth and water' and the calibre of writing," group founder and competition co-ordinator Caroline Early said this week.

Queenstown thespians Jane Robertson, Fiona Stephenson and Alex Derby will read the three winning short stories aloud.

• The top three stories will be published in the Queenstown Times, starting on Wednesday, November 3.
