Whirlwind ton by Ferris after he decides to go for it

James Ferris came back to Oamaru to play this season just to keep his side going.

Well, on Saturday he did more than that. He picked it up and carried it over the winning line.

And in damn quick time.

Ferris (27) scored a whirlwind century to help his Oamaru-St Kevin's side to a six-wicket win over Valley in Oamaru.

He came to the wicket at Waitaki Boys' High School with the side in trouble having lost three wickets and yet to reach 50, chasing a total of 185.

But Ferris then took out the long handle and rattled off a century off just 25 balls. He eventually scored an unbeaten 107 off 29 balls to give his side the win.

Much has been made of South African cricketer David Miller scoring the fastest century in all international twenty20 matches yesterday, notching his ton in 35 balls.

Well, Ferris went 10 balls quicker and hit balls all over the park.

''When I came out I hit the first ball over the slips.

''It wasn't a chance or anything but I thought then I might as well go for it,'' he said.

''I hit them all round the wicket. I knew it was pretty quick but I did not realise it was that quick.''

For the record, he hit 12 sixes and six fours, bringing up his century with a six back over the bowler's head. He then blocked a couple of balls so a younger team-mate could hit the winning runs.

It may have been a big knock but it is not the highest score of his career. In fact, it is well short. A few years ago while playing club cricket in the Canterbury country competition he hit 293 off just 91 balls, which included about 50 boundaries.

Ferris said he was just glad to get the win and there were a few celebrations to mark the day.

''It was just a good team effort. Robbie Breen took five wickets and Nick Johnstone bagged four so it was good to get the win.''

Ferris went to Waitaki Boys' High School and then Otago Boys' High School for a couple of years before leaving school. He works as a client manager at City Care in Christchurch.

He played in Christchurch and then in the country competition but with the club in Oamaru needing players this season he drives down to Oamaru to play every weekend.

Ferris wants to play Hawke Cup cricket this season and had been included in a North Otago pre-season training squad.
