New chairman for conservation group

Te Anau resident Dr Chris Shaw has been appointed chairman of conservation group the Guardians of Lakes Manapouri, Monowai and Te Anau.

Dr Shaw has been a member of the group for more than two years.

He is a consulting company director and holds a PhD in aerodynamics and a masters in engineering and is also a trustee of the conservation-focused Pomona Island Charitable Trust.

Teri McClelland, of Invercargill, has been appointed to fill Dr Shaw's previous position as a group member, while Jane Davis, of Riverton, will continue as a group member after serving for more than four years in the role.

The new appointments were made by Conservation Minister Kate Wilkinson.

The conservation group is responsible for advising the minister on the environmental, ecological and public impacts of power schemes on the three lakes.

The group also advises the minister on information regarding the lakes' operating guidelines and water levels.

The group was established under the Conservation Act 1987.

The Department of Conservation services the group.
