New school plans for next year

Parents of prospective pupils at Remarkables Primary School, which officially opened in August, are invited to the school's open day this Sunday.

The Frankton school is inviting parents of children from new entrants to year 6 to tour the school and attend one of three short presentations from principal Debbie Dickson.

The school wanted to encourage parents considering sending their children to enrol now for 2011 onwards, Ms Dickson said.

"As a brand-new school, we don't have any historical data on which to base future enrolment figures.

"The Education Ministry requires our enrolment numbers for 2011 now, so our staffing requirements can be met and resources allocated for pupils.

"We can then advertise our teaching positions as soon as possible, to enable us to employ suitably qualified teachers keen to make the move to Queenstown to join our hard-working team.

"Those teachers, in turn, will have to give suitable amounts of notice to their current employer."

Ms Dickson said the school was urging parents who had already taken enrolment packs to return them.

"We're a growing school of 21st-century learners in an amazing new building in one of the most stunning parts of New Zealand.

"I'm sure all parents would like to think we can attract some of the best teachers in the country, and I'd like to think we can, if we're able to start the advertising process with some urgency."

The open day will be held between 10am and 2pm and Mrs Dickson will make a short presentation in the school hall for years 5 and 6 at 10am, for years 3 and 4 at noon, and at 1pm for years 1 and 2.

Parents will be able to meet the team leader for each year group, and each presentation will be followed by a tour of the school.

The school's Remarkables Parents Association will hold a sausage sizzle and tickets will be on sale for Glittering Peaks, the school's first social evening and fundraiser, with Peter Hillary as special guest.

Ms Dickson said presentations would cover the school's curriculum, 21st-century learning processes, and include details of planned outdoor education experiences for years 5 and 6 and ultimately, years 7 and 8.

"We've got some amazing camps and outdoor learning experiences booked up, that we've kept under wraps.

"Now that years 5 and 6 are starting next February, it's time to reveal what they are.

"I'd love to see as many parents here as possible on Sunday and we welcome any questions."
