South Dunedin's electric postal delivery vehicles have been taken off the road with faults just a few days after they became operational.

New Zealand Post announced yesterday it was pre-emptively recalling its 400 Paxster AS vehicles across the country for maintenance.

This included the five vehicles being trialled in South Dunedin, Corstorphine and Waverley, since last Friday.

New Zealand Post senior media adviser Amanda Broatch said the Dunedin vehicles were taken off the roads early yesterday after faults were identified with retaining nuts in the vehicle's shock absorbers.

There would be ''some impact on delivery standards'' as mail would need to be delivered on foot and bikes until the issues were fixed, she said.

''We're assessing the impact today, making sure parcels will be able to go on courier vans.''

The recall was a precautionary measure, she said.

''Health and safety is something we take very seriously.''

The vehicles would be repaired this week, but it was not known when they would return to service.

The Paxsters can operate on footpaths and had been introduced over the past year to deliver letters and parcels.

New Zealand Post hopes to bring more to the city in the next year.
