Rugby: Fans may get another shot at World Cup tickets

There may be more tickets available for Rugby World Cup games in Dunedin next year but tournament organisers are making no promises.

The four-week allocation period for tickets to pool games across the country closed yesterday but Rugby NZ 2011 staff were unable to provide details on how many tickets had been sold overall, or for which venues.

People wanting tickets to pool games also have a chance to go into the ballot for the semifinals and finals.

The ballot will take place in February.

The application process for pool games did not guarantee tickets and people who applied will be told this month if they have been successful.

If there are tickets left over, and there is no guarantee of that, more tickets may be sold next year.

That will also depend on how many tickets come back unsold from overseas and tour companies, or are not wanted by Rugby World Cup organisers.

A total of 400,000 tickets went on sale for the tournament.

Information and figures relating to games that have sold out are likely to be available before the end of the year.

Dunedin is to host three World Cup games.

Scotland plays Georgia on September 14, England takes on either Romania or Uruguay on September 24 and Ireland plays Italy on October 2.

Romania and Uruguay do battle in a two-match home-and-away playoff series next month to decide which team takes the 20th and final place in the 2011 line-up.
