The Remarkables access road has been reopened after closing earlier today due to fire.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand principal rural fire officer Graeme Still, told the Otago Daily Times earlier today a controlled burn had breached its “containment line.”

We stopped traffic coming down just as a precautionary measure, he said.

The fire breached its containment line. We were working on it until it was deemed safe enough for people to come down off the hill, he said.

A police media spokeswoman confirmed police were called to the scene just before 4pm to “help manage traffic”.

The road was reopened at 5pm this afternoon.
