Mr Cook (81) fell over his walking frame when it dropped into a hole on the edge of the footpath at the crossing on Thursday morning.
"I just didn't see it, it wasn't marked at all. My back's sore, my knees are sore."
He was grateful for the people who rushed to help him up, he said.
"I'd never have got up again without them."
Apart from the hole, much of the footpath where it sloped down to the King Edward St roadway at the crossing point was uneven, he said.
It was another example of the poor condition of South Dunedin's streets and he had rung the Dunedin City Council to let them know of the problem, Mr Cook said.
Dunedin City Council senior contract adviser Peter Hughes said staff had been sent out to assess the corner yesterday afternoon and interim measures to make the corner safe during the weekend would be made.
On Monday the surface of the corner would be lifted and relaid, he said.
