The Southland Racing Club will soon be on the lookout for a racing manager following its exit from Gallop South.
The club had previously signalled it intended to leave its parent organisation, and president Sean Bellew confirmed the club had stuck to that by officially leaving at the end of last month.
The president signalled the reason for the split was that his club was not comfortable with the direction of the Gallop South organisation.
The move has left the Southland Racing Club needing to implement administrative changes as it takes back responsibility for the managing of its racing nominations and fields and other day-to-day duties.
''We have got to get our technology a lot more advanced because that was part of the privilege of being in the cluster, that universal engine and the administration hub,'' Bellew said.
''We have got to change a lot of stuff and it is coming at a cost - a cost of money and time.''
The club has moved quickly to protect its biggest raceday, the Christmas At The Races meeting at Invercargill.
''I have contracted Andrea Thomas, who was a previous Gallop South employee. She has been contracted through to the end of January for the purpose of marketing Christmas At The Races,'' Bellew said.
The event is not only a key revenue driver for the industry, but one of the biggest days on Invercargill's social calendar that regularly attracts more that 5000 racegoers each year.
The club discussed its future administrative structures at a meeting earlier this week, but would not rush into making any decisions, Bellew said.
''We are sitting tight at the moment.
''We had a board meeting as recently as Monday and we are happy with our position.''
Bellew confirmed the club would need to appoint a manager in the near future, though it is unclear whether that will be in time for the club's first meeting of the new season on November 23.
''There would be a wonderful job opportunity there for someone.''
The club would first look internally ''and if we can't get anybody that wants to take over the role we will have to go outwards.''
Gallop South has previously signalled it is looking to restructure its operation, which could include staffing changes.
If staff are cut, the Southland Racing Club was open to the idea of taking on more former Gallop South employees, Bellew said.
