Lowry flew to Melbourne yesterday after being invited to work a two-week stint in Weir's Ballarat stables.
``I thought it was a good opportunity to go. There is not much racing around here, so the time is right, '' he said.
The trip was initiated by White Robe Lodge studmaster Wayne Stewart, who is good friends with Weir's racing manager, Jeremy Rogers, Lowry said.
The Weir stable told the rider to bring his race-day riding gear with him.
Lowry said he would be elated if he managed to secure a race ride.
``But I am mainly going over there for the experience - not only the riding aspect but training or whatever facets of the industry I can learn more about.''
Although he will be a long way from home, the apprentice will be in familiar company.
Lowry will be working alongside former Wingatui riders KC Walters and Toni Direen
Lowry heads to Victoria on the back of starring in a Trackside television profile produced while he was at last week's Grand National Carnival.
``They chased me around Riccarton all morning and had a few words after it.''
The spotlight on the jockey continues to increase as his career builds.
Lowry has kicked home winners at a strike rate of 4.96 rides per win, last season, second only to Opie Bosson in the full-time flat rider's ranks.
``I'm just trying to be consistent in my riding and that strike rate is a good way of reflecting it.
``It is something I pride myself on a lot.''
Lowry has set himself some lofty goals for the new season, but is conscious of living up to them
``As of late, in the media, there is a lot of hype around me. I have really got to live up to the hype now.''
``I'd like to achieve 50 wins this season.
`I nearly got there last season but it's not an easy feat to do, I don't have a claim now so it's another challenge, but I'm ready for it.
``I'd also like to run in the top 10 in the country. It's quite a big goal, but you have to set these goals in order to achieve them.'' - Additional reporting NZ Racing Desk
