Roads in Central Otago have been badly affected due to heavy rain, snow and ice.

Motorists are urged to take care due to icy roads and damage from the severe storm.

The Central Otago District Council said on Sunday that roads in Manuherikia and Maniototo have significant damage and not to drive unless urgent.

Further road and asset assessments would be carried out on Sunday.

River levels were receding and weather forecasts show the rain was clearing, but there were widespread road closures in the Maniototo and Ida Valley, and damage to roads, the Otago Regional Council said.

Residents in Omakau, Patearoa or Ophir need to boil water.  Ranfurly and Naseby residents were asked to conserve water.

Central Otago District Council roading manager Murray Hasler said on Saturday in there was flooding throughout the Maniototo.

The Naseby area and Ida Valley were "badly affected''. In Naseby the issue was compounded with about 15cm of new snow overnight.

Emergency Management Otago said the Manuherikia River at Ophir last night had its fourth highest level on record.

One property was evacuated from Oturehua.

Ranfurly resident Amie Pont said creeks running through the town had flooded, and there was significant damage to its rugby ground.

There was minimal flooding on the town's roads. "There were a few groups of people stranded here last night, trying to get to Alexandra".

Areas nearby Ranfurly, such as Kyeburn and Oturehua, were severely affected by flooding, she said.

There was minor surface flooding in the Teviot Valley. Debris could be seen floating in the streets of Roxburgh.
