Queenstown suburb Kelvin Heights is swarming with police after a person was killed in a car explosion in a park this evening.
Emergency services were called to the car explosion in Jardine Park just after 9pm.
A Fire Service spokeswoman said they received a number of calls about the explosion. They had extinguished the blaze, but police and one appliance remained at the scene.
Police confirmed a person was killed.
A reporter at the scene said a cordon had been set up at the intersection of SH6 and Peninsula Rd, which is about 7km from the park.
There was an armed policeman at the cordon and traffic was backed up.
